Fun Fact: Rhododendrons Close Relatives of Madrona

Madrona Tree SculptureI came across this gardening article by Ciscoe when something caught my eye: rhododendrons are close relatives of madrona.  I never thought about it, but it makes sense.  I also came to the realization that Ciscoe is much more entertaining on television than in print.

Seattle’s Madrona neighborhood was named after the madrona trees in the woods across from Madrona Beach.

The Madrona home features a master suite plus two additional bedrooms and an extra bathroom on the top floor. On the main floor the living room and dining room have the same stunning views as the upper floor.  The gorgeous cooks kitchen with stainless appliances opens up to the dining room and the view beyond.

The Madrona rental market is very strong.  Recently a Madrona home was rented in less than two weeks.  The asking rent for that home was $7,500.

Grand Opening Week in Madrona – Ice Cream & Pizza

Seattle PizzaI have been blogging about Molly Moon’s and Pritty Boys almost ad nauseam.    But the time has finally come, both are opening this week in the Madrona Business District.  Molly Moon’s will opening tomorrow, Tuesday, at 3 pm and Pritty Boys Family Pizzeria is opening Thursday.  For those ice cream eating pizza lovers this is a dream come true.

Interbay’s Farmers Market Inspired by Madrona

Interbay Farmers MarketInterbay is getting a farmers market and it was inspired by Madrona.  Like Madrona, the farmers market will be in the parking lot of the neighborhood grocery store.  In Interbay, it will be in the parking lot of the new Whole Foods.  You know what they say:  imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Do not forget today is the first day for Madrona Farmers Market.

Madrona Farmers Market This Friday

Madrona Farmers MarketJust a reminder that Madrona Farmers Market’s first day in 2011 will be this Friday, May 20th, from 3 PM to 7 PM.  And despite Seattle not being over 70 degrees in nearly 200 days, it looks like the Madrona Farmers Market timed the weather perfectly with an expected high of 69 (come on I know we can hit 70).

Grand Opening for Molly Moon’s in Madrona

Molly Moons MadronaMolly Moon’s is set to open in Madrona very soon.  I have previously written about Molly Moon’s opening their new micro-store in Madrona, but I saw them working on the storefront today and they said they were set to open in a week: Tuesday, May 24th at 3 PM.  In fact, Molly Moon, the owner, was there today checking on the progress (see picture) and will again be there for the grand opening from 3 PM to 5 PM.  The initial plan is to have the store open 7 days a week, noon to 11 PM.

Madrona’s Molly Moon’s is a totally new concept for them.  They will NOT be selling ice cream cones.  They will have their famous ice cream prepackage ready to eat, but they will also have specialty treats which they do not offer at any of their other locations.  It will great to see the concept unveiled early next week.

Note:  Madrona Laundromat will stay open.  The new Molly Moon’s will be located in the southwest corner of a previously little used corner of the laundromat.

Madrona’s Pritty Boys Family Pizza Opening Soon

Zaw PizzaPritty Boys Family Pizza had a food booth at Madrona Mayfair this past Saturday – which was not only a good place to get pizza, but also a place to find the scuttlebutt about the restaurant.  First of all, the pizza was very good.  The peperoni were small (about half the size of peperoni on typical pizza) and flavorful.  I did pat it with a napkin to soak up some grease, but to me that is not a bad thing.

When I ordered, I spoke to the woman serving the pizza.  She said she will be working at the restaurant when it opens.  I asked her when they were going to open, and she answered that there was no official opening date because they have had some delays, but while she could not promise a date, they were trying to open next weekend.  So whether it is this weekend or not, it is good news that Pritty Boy Family Pizzeria is coming soon to Madrona.

In addition, to speaking to the pizzeria employee at Madrona Mayfair, I walked by the restaurant this weekend.  The place is really shaping up.  In the northwest corner of the restaurant, they have a play area set up with a various toys for small kids to play with.  In the south end of the restaurant, they had a video game machine.  This portion of the restaurant is set up for young teenagers.  With about 20 tables, the Madrona pizzeria should be a popular place for the neighborhood families to hang out whether their kids are 2 or 14.

After Madrona Mayfair Head to Leschi’s Flo Ware Park

Seattle BalloonsIf you still have some energy after Mayfair then head over to Flo Ware Park (map) in Leschi for the Annual Flo Ware Neighborhood Celebration.  From noon to 4 PM on Saturday, May 14th the Leschi neighborhood will be celebrating the life of Flo Ware.  There will be music, potluck, kid’s games, face painting, dancing, etc.

Madrona Mayfair Bike Decorating

Madrona MayfairWell, Madrona Mayfair is less than 24 hours away so it is time to get the bikes decorated for the opening parade.  The opening Mayfair Parade consists mainly of neighborhood kids on their bikes riding two blocks from Alvin Larkins Park to Madrona Playground.  Of course these are no ordinary bikes, at least once the decorations are added.  Most of the bikes will be plastered with balloons, ribbons, etc. to make the kids ordinary bikes into special Madrona Mayfair bicycles.  To help kids make this happen they can show up today, Friday the 13th (Makes me think of Friday the 13th the movie and the 50 sequels), from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Madrona Playfield Shelterhouse (Locate in Madrona Playground on the east side of tennis courts).  A bunch of neighborhood kids and parents will be there getting their bikes ready for the big day.  If you cannot get there today, then just show up early (9 AM) tomorrow at Alvin Larkins Park and you can decorate your bike there as well.

Madrona Mayfair will start with the parade at 9:30 AM tomorrow (Saturday, May 14th – Reminds me of the movie Saturday the 14th) at Alvin Larkins Park.  The Mayfair festivities will be from just after 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Madrona Playground.

Come on Sunny Weather – We Need You For Madrona Mayfair

Madrona MayfairCome on sunny weather, we need you this weekend.  Saturday is Madrona Mayfair and the bouncy house is just that more bouncy, the pony rides are just that more fun, and the face paint smudges that much less when you are out.

I just checked the weather and while Thursday and Friday are suppose to be nice, Saturday is another story.  So hopefully that really means it will be nice on Saturday.  We will see.

Rain or shine, Madrona Mayfair must go on though.  So show up on Saturday, May 14, 2011, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM for the festivities.  Fellow Madrona residents, the Madrona Community Council, and Madrona businesses are pitching in to make it a great event.

People will start gathering at Alvin Larkins Park around 9:00 AM and the parade (which consists of neighborhood kids on bikes and their parents walking along) will get started around 9:30 AM.  The parade will go along 34th Avenue and end at Madrona Playground where there will be free entertainment including pny rides, bouncy house, face painting, and other carnival games.  St. Cloud’s and Molly Moon’s will be selling food and there will also be a neighborhood bake sale.  All proceeds go to pay for Madrona Mayfair.

So come one, come all to Madrona Mayfair – it will be a great time – rain or shine.
