Get To Know Madrona’s Stairs On Seattle Stairway Walks Day

Seattle StairwaysSeattle is home to more than 600 public stairways, though many of them are hidden down dead-end streets, in wooded ravines, or tucked between stately homes, making them difficult to find if you don’t know where to look. With the 2012 publication of their book Seattle Stairway Walks, Seattle couple Jake and Cathy Jaramillo put some of those hidden gems on the map, and the book’s popularity led to a similarly named website and the Seattle Stairway Walks Day, hosted by non-profit organization Feet First. The third annual event, taking place on Saturday, February 7, will take curious pedestrians on guided walking tours of staircases all over the city, including in Madrona and Leschi. This is a great chance to get to know your own neighborhood from a different perspective, or to get familiar with other parts of the city through the unique features that often accompany public stairways, such as pocket parks, viewpoints, and public art.

If you’re already well-acquainted with our neighborhood stairways here in Madrona, choose a tour on Queen Anne, North Capitol Hill, Ravenna, or a host of other locales on the schedule for the day. Proceeds from your $10 suggested donation for the tour will benefit Feet First, an organization that promotes walkable communities in Washington. Registration is required, and spots fill up quickly, so if you’re hoping for a specific tour make sure to sign up soon! All walks begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m., and meeting locations will be sent upon registration.
