The Market’s Open!

The seasonal Madrona Farmers Market opened recently on May 19th! Because of our unusually long rainy season this year in WA State (the longest on record in modern history), some of the farm vendors understandably had a delay with their crops. But our warm season is firmly underway now, as are abundant produce, herbs, and artisanal goods!  Look at this chart to see what’s approximately available. (Keep in mind there might be a lag, due to previous rain).

Recently, Seattle was rated 4th in the nation for being the most fit city. One of the reasons cited for this improvement was the increase in the number of farmers markets in our area: a positive indication that unprocessed, natural food can make a difference in one’s health.

If you would like to visit other farmers markets in other neighborhoods as well, here is a complete list of places and hours from The Seattle Times. The Madrona Farmers Market is on Fridays, from 3-7 pm through the end of September. Bon appetit!

Madrona Farmers Market Opens This Friday, May 15th

This Friday, May 15th, the Madrona Farmers Market kicks off the season, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the corner of MLK and E Union Street (Madrona Grocery Outlet). With more favorites returning like Olsen Farms (provider of fine locally raised meats & sausages), Kirsop Farms (read: FRESH Produce! Their produce is harvested within 24 hours of the market shopping hours), and newcomers, like Sweet Caroline’s, (offering gourmet jams and shrubs), this season’s market will have your needs covered.

This year’s farmers market will have over 30 vendors offering a mix of seasonal produce, flowers, sustainably caught fish, prepared foods, artisanal sips and savories, sweet treats and locally produced crafts.

Friday is set to be (mostly) sunny with a high of 68 degrees and with the excitement of opening day in the air, there is no excuse for your absence at this seasonal neighborhood event. So, round up the kids, pack your reusable bags, and meet your fellow neighbors while stocking up on prime local produce and products. Remember, our farmer’s rely on the support of their community to continue providing the amazing things they do, make sure they know how appreciative we are to have a Farmers Market in our neighborhood!

Madrona Farmers Market Coming Soon!

madrona farmers market

Spring is finally here, and with that brings the arrival of fresh produce, meats and specialty foods at Seattle’s seasonal farmers markets, including Madrona’s, which is slated to begin Friday, May 16 and will take place every Friday afternoon through September 26.

Get your baskets ready to fill up with all the market has to offer – a small sampling of last year’s bounty included fresh meat and potatoes from Olsen Farms in the Colville area, juicy peaches from Martin Family Orchards in Cashmere, hazelnuts from Holmquist Hazelnut Orchards in Lynden, and fresh Washington salmon from Wilson Fish. Make a whole night of it by getting your grocery shopping done, watching a live cooking demonstration, and enjoying a meal prepared by market vendors (last year included Los Chilangos traditional Mexican food and their specialty Al Pastor). The market also encourages attendees to support the local, family-owned businesses in the surrounding neighborhoods of Madrona, Madison Valley, the Central Area and Capitol Hill.

The Madrona Farmers Market is open every Friday, May 16 through September 26 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., and takes place in the parking lot of the Madrona Grocery Outlet at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Way E & E Union St. For more information, visit their website, and the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance.

Time is Running Out: Honey Biscuits at Madrona Farmers Market

Time is running out to shop at Madrona Farmers Market this year.  The farmers market runs every Friday afternoon from Spring through the Summer; the last one this year will be Friday, September 27th.  Thus you still have time to buy your favorite produce, but do not forget about the honey biscuits.  Art Stone, who first started making biscuits with his grandmother in North Carolina when he was 4 years old, founded Honey Biscuits and has sold his biscuits throughout the city including previously at Beecher’s in Pike Place and Verite Coffee.  Now you can find his biscuits at many of the local farmers market including Madrona Farmers Market.  Craving biscuits?  Walk down to the Madrona Farmers Market this afternoon and look for the honey biscuits.

Interbay’s Farmers Market Inspired by Madrona

Interbay Farmers MarketInterbay is getting a farmers market and it was inspired by Madrona.  Like Madrona, the farmers market will be in the parking lot of the neighborhood grocery store.  In Interbay, it will be in the parking lot of the new Whole Foods.  You know what they say:  imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Do not forget today is the first day for Madrona Farmers Market.

Madrona Farmers Market This Friday

Madrona Farmers MarketJust a reminder that Madrona Farmers Market’s first day in 2011 will be this Friday, May 20th, from 3 PM to 7 PM.  And despite Seattle not being over 70 degrees in nearly 200 days, it looks like the Madrona Farmers Market timed the weather perfectly with an expected high of 69 (come on I know we can hit 70).

Madrona Farmers Market Opening Soon

Madrona Farmers MarketSeattle’s most famed farmers market is of course the Pike Place Market which Seattleites have frequented for over 100 years.  But there are also many local farmers markets that consistently served our neighborhoods for over 20 years now.  Fremont Market started in 1990 and several sister neighborhood markets have sprung up since.  And those are not the only neighborhood markets around – click this link to see more Seattle neighborhood markets.

Madrona Farmers Market tradition is not nearly as old as Pike Place Market or Fremont Market, nonetheless, nearby residents look forward to it opening from spring through summer.  Madrona Farmers Market opens Friday, May 20th and will take place every Friday through September from 3PM to 7 PM.  The market is located in the north parking lot of Grocery Outlet and will have everything from fresh produce, flowers, organic meat, to homemade pasta.  Please shop Madrona Farmers Market and support your local vendors.

Side Note:  Walking around the Madrona neighborhood, you might have notice signs for a farmers market stapled on telephone poles.  If you do not look closely you might mistake these as announcements for the opening of the Madrona Farmers Market.  They are actually for the new Othello Market which is an indoor, year-round market that is located in Rainier Valley south of Seward Park.  To learn more about Othello Market click the link.
