Series Line Up:

August 6thAzanga Marimba, Check out this awesome and lively African marimba one of their performances here

“Our ensemble plays using eight marimbas – three Sopranos, three tenors, a baritone, and a base – and hoshos, or gourd shakers. The marimbas are handcrafted xylophones made from various hardwoods. The keys are fine-tuned to reflect tones playing African societies. Each key sits above a resonator with a vibrating membrane to amplify the sound and add a unique “buzz” to the music.”

August 13th – Lucile Street

A five person band that includes Christopher Magee on trombone, Mark Aaron on bass, Damien Garcia on drums, Peter O’Neil on guitar, and featuring Becky Lewis on vocals.

August 20thAlkali Earth, youth metal band from Washington Middle School

“Formed in 4th grade in 2013, Alkali Earth consists of four pre-teens with a passion for 80’s thrash metal and its predecessors. In addition to covers from Rush, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath and the like, they play a few original songs, loosely focused on what their parents are currently doing to the planet.”

You can hear more of their great tracks here

August 27th – The Professors – SPU Professors (& Betsy Erving’s owner of the Arts Aloft’s, husband) featuring 60’s rock and roll.

These professions are going to teach you a thing or two about good old rock ‘n roll. You’re homework assignment for the evening…. boogie!

“The Comedy Of Errors” At Madrona Playfield This Saturday

bard

The GreenStage theater company is bringing its Backyard Bard series to Madrona Playfield this Saturday with its rendition of Shakespeare’s ‘The Comedy of Errors.’ While GreenStage produces full-length plays through its Shakespeare in the Park series, the Backyard Bard productions are Shakespeare classics pared down to 45 minutes and feature just four actors.

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with Shakespeare, or with theater in general, this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet and enjoy the theater in your own neighborhood. Pack your blanket, your picnic basket, and your imagination, and let the actors transport you to the ancient Grecian city of Ephesus, where ‘The Comedy’ is set.

GreenStage, now in its 26th season of performing Shakespeare, aims to bring high-quality theater to the public for free, using public parks as their backdrops. After this season, they will have earned the rare distinction of having performed every play in Shakespeare’s catalog. This Saturday’s show begins at 7:00 p.m. at the playfield (34th and Spring) and is free, though GreenStage is grateful for any donations.

If you are interested in other Shakespeare in the Park productions, visit GreenStage’s website for a full schedule!

Love Gardening? Madrona Playfield Needs Your Help

When renovations on Madrona Playfield were coming to an end nearly a decade ago, one local woman stepped up to the plate and volunteered to upkeep the raised gardens located at 34th and Spring St entrance to the Playfield. Mary Gallwey is a retired ombudsman of Washington State University, and helped take the gardens from the pile of construction debris and poor soil conditions, to guiding the gardens to flourish today. garden tools

Mary was awarded Madrona Community Council’s Local Hero Award this year for her dedicated work in the gardens, but she is finding it harder and harder to manage the upkeep these days. She and the MCC are now searching for someone (or a few folks with green thumbs) to take over the garden maintenance, which includes pruning, weeding, replanting, and the occasional run in with the local Parks Department. If you’re able to offer some time in the garden, please contact the MCC at madronanews@gmail.com for further details. Mary is available to offer her knowledge of the gardens, and help those willing to take over for her in the Playfield.

Madrona Shelterhouse Remodel

Madrona ShelterhouseAnyone that has gone to the Madrona Playground lately has seen the chain link fence around the Madrona Shelterhouse.  The Madrona Sheltehouse received funds about two years ago to be updated and the work has finally begun.  Basically, the changes are the bathrooms are being updated, the bathroom doors are being swapped for nice looking gates (for safety reasons), and there will be an additional bathroom added to the interior of the Shelterhouse that can be used year-round for people who rent the Shelterhouse for events.

The work is scheduled to be done by Madrona Mayfair, May 18th.  Let’s cross our fingers it will be done on schedule.
