An Open Letter to Save the Madrona Pub

We’ve been asked to share this open letter with the community regarding the Madrona Pub.

Dear Mr. Flora, Ms. Harris, and Mr. Harris:
The undersigned are devoted customers of the Madrona Eatery and Pub. We are
very concerned about the looming loss of this crucial neighborhood gathering
place, even though the owner desires to extend his lease with you. We
therefore ask you to go the extra mile to work out a lease extension with
the current owner of the Pub, Burke Shethar.

Thanks in part to the Pub, and really thanks also to your good stewardship
of the property, Madrona still has a lot of individual character. We fear
that this could go away fast, as is happening all over our city with the
loss of affordable, congenial, long-lived, long-loved gathering places.

The Madrona Pub has been anchoring the commercial neighborhood and the wider
residential neighborhood for 20 years. It is that rare place where whole
families can gather, where people can watch sports, get good food and good
ales as in a European pub. We can’t imagine that a new owner would be able
to create all these fine features, given increased rents and the time it
takes for a neighborhood place to develop a loyal clientele.  Madrona’s
two-block commercial district already has 9-10 restaurants, some with very
high turnover. A new place will have a tough go of it.

The Pub fits an important niche in the ecology of these restaurants:
affordable, family-friendly, full of “regulars,” open every night of the
week, and presided over by a staff and owner who know their customers well
and by name. It takes years to create such a feeling, such loyalty.  Such
continuity is also a big benefit to the landlord.

We know how important it is for us and the Madrona neighborhood to have such
a beloved gathering place. We know how much dedication and care Burke and
his crew have put into this enterprise. We worry that it is irreplaceable in
this economy. So please, property managers and owners, work it out with
Burke so the Pub can extend its lease!

You can run Pritty Boys Pizza in Madrona!

pizzaDo you want to run a pizza restaurant in Madrona?  As many of you know, Pritty Boys Pizza closed, but the business is available for purchase.  We should have known this was coming: the owner’s Madrona home recently went on the market and the rumor is they moved across the lake.

We hope someone buys the restaurant….we already miss the fun family atmosphere, the pizza, and our personal favorite: the broccoli.  First the Madrona Ale House gets rid of their toys, now this!  Madrona families with young children are panicking.

We wish the Pritty Boy’s owners well.  They quietly supported Madrona activities such as Mayfair, Madrona Dine Out for Madrona K-8, and recently paid for a large portion of the holiday decorations for the Madrona business district.

Dine Out To Benefit Madrona K-8 On April 8

Almost anywhere you eat on 34th Avenue on April 8 will benefit Madrona K-8 School as part of its 6th annual Dine Out fundraiser. Participating restaurants will be donating a portion of the day’s sales to the school, which will be using the proceeds directly to support arts and enrichment programming, including funding two full-time artists in residence from Art Corps, the largest nonprofit arts education program in Seattle.

All you need to do to participate is let the restaurant know you’re there for Dine Out, and enjoy your meal! Participating 34th Avenue restaurants are: Bistro Turkuaz, Bottlehouse, Cupcake Royale/Verite, Hi Spot, Madrona Eatery and Alehouse, Naam, Pritty Boys Family Pizzeria, and St. Cloud’s. Barrio, on 12th Avenue on Capitol Hill will also be participating. Reservations are recommended if you choose a restaurant that takes them.

$300 Per Person at New Madrona Restaurant?

Noyer SeattleWhile the headline is an attention grabber and may make many shake their heads with dismay, we do not want it to damper the excitement for Ethan Stowell’s two new restaurants coming soon to Madrona.  Yes, it is true there are reports that Stowell’s new Madrona restaurant will be $300 per person, but that will be for his ultra-high end, small restaurant Noyer.  Noyer, pronounced “Noi-YAY” and means “walnut” in French, will occupy a space off the courtyard behind the former Restaurant Bea that many Madrona residents did not even know existed unless they inquired/attended/booked it for a private party.  In addition, $300 per person will include champagne, fixed wine pairings with a tasting menu with all the best possible local ingredients.  It will definitely take Seattle restaurants to a new level.

Red CowIf $300 per person is not in your budget, the larger Red Cow, which will occupy the former Restaurant Bea’s main restaurant space, will be a welcomed addition to Madrona.  Red Cow, a french-inspired steak and frites restaurant is expected to open this month (as compared to Noyer expected opening in April).   The menu is already available online, and while subject to change, offers steaks starting at $21 (Hanger) and up to $38 (Filet Mignon) for a single serving (steaks options available for two+).

Keep your eyes open when taking a left onto 34th from Union, Red Cow will soon be a buzz with activity when they become the newest restaurant in Madrona …. the newest at least until Noyer opens.

Dine at Madrona’s St. Clouds Restaurant to Support CAN

St CloudsLooking for an excuse to dine out at one of Madrona’s favorite restaurants?  On February 11th, St. Clouds will donate a portion of the night’s proceeds to College Access Now (CAN) programs. CAN is dedicated to making college admission and graduation possible for talented, motivated and economically disadvantaged students. Cupcake Royale Celebrates 10 Years

Cupcake RoyaleWhere has the time gone?  Ten years ago Cupcake Royale open it first store here in our Madrona neighborhood.  In honor of this huge milestone, Cupcake Royale would like to celebrate with its customers on December 9th by giving a free Dance Party Babycake and fabulous deals on merchandise at all seven Cupcake Royale locations.  The real celebration (in our opinion) will be that night at the Madrona location from 6:00pm to 9:00pm where you can join the owner and founder, Jody Hall, for a dance party that will include dancing, light appetizers, bubbly and fun!  Come join the party, share your stories of Cupcake Royale in your life, hang out with friends and neighbors as well as Jody and the team, enjoy a glass of bubbly and dance to your heart’s content.  We hope to see you there!

Shop Madrona for Small Business Saturday

Shop Local SeattleSupport our local Madrona businesses this coming weekend on Small Business Saturday (November 30th).  There are a ton of reasons to shop locally: keeping your dollars in the local economy, building entrepreneurship, supporting vibrant neighborhoods, etc.  There is even a local website that helps you find local Seattle stores, although their list is far from exhaustive.  So this Saturday, buy a coffee from Hi-Spot, get a drink at Bottlehouse, buy a meal at Turkuaz, St. Clouds, Madrona Alehouse, Café Soleil, or Pritty Boys Pizza, and get your dessert from Cupcake Royale or Molly Moons.  Purchase a piece of art at Conrow Porcelain, shop for a Christmas gift for dad at Hammer+Awl or for mom at Hitchcock, buy a gift for your hard-to-buy-for co-worker at Nena’s gift shop, and find a bottle of wine at Madrona Wine Merchant to take over to a friend’s house for dinner.  There are a ton of Madrona stores, shops and businesses we are leaving out (check out our likes on our Madrona Facebook for others), but shop locally this Saturday and we know you will find everything you are looking for.

Dulce’s Opens in Lawrence Lofts

Dulces had a long thriving life in Madrona for a number of years before Pritty Boys Pizzeria moved in on 34th Ave. They relocated to a downtown location under Pike Place Market, which boarded up in the summer of 2012, fairly quickly after it opened. Now the husband and wife team behind the Latin cuisine have moved closer to their old stomping ground in the Lawrence Lofts project on 19th & Madison. Dulces Bistro

Dulces has a newish name – Dulces Bistro & Wine, and a new look and feel. They have spiced up their menu, creating new spins on old favorites, and have expanded their wine collection extensively. They have a full bar, and happy hour daily from 5-7pm. We’re excited to check out the new menu items, and new location. If you’ve stopped in recently, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the new space!

New Madrona Restaurant(s): Ethan Stowell’s Red Cow and Noyer

Red CowMadrona has a new restaurant….or I guess two new restaurants coming to the neighborhood.  Ethan Stowell has announced through his Seattle restaurant blog that he is opening two restaurants where Restaurant Bea used to be located: Red Cow and Noyer.  Red Cow will be located in the main restaurant and seat 55 people (35 in dining room, 20 in the bar) and Noyer will sit only 4 tables and will be located off the back courtyard, presumably where Restaurant Bea had its banquet room.

This is how Ethan Stowell blog has described his two new Madrona restaurants starting with Red Cow:

First, say hello to Red Cow. Red Cow is going to be a brasserie primarily known for steak frites—really good steak frites. We are going to flesh out the rest of the menu with a wide variety of classic bistro fare using Pacific Northwest ingredients and pair it all with a rigorous wine offering.

And Noyer is described as:

Imagine a lush, intimate, multi-course dinner with paired wines along the way. A very high-end, leisurely affair that you can enjoy at your own pace. When you reserve a table at Noyer, it’s your table for the night. Tell us when you plan to arrive and we’ll meet you in the courtyard with something bubbly. You will be taken care of. You will indulge. You will leave happy. This is something new for Seattle—and us. We are very excited about Noyer.

For those you who are not familiar with Ethan Stowell.  Ethan grew up in Seattle before becoming a very successful chef and restaurateur that has been recognized by Food & Wine, Seattle Metropolitan, Seattle Magazine and Seattle Post-Intelligencer as well as others.  While all of his restaurant’s menus vary, they are all known for keeping it simple and using fresh ingredients.  Ethan restaurants include Queen Anne’s How to Cook a Wolf, Ballard’s Staple & Fancy, Belltown’s Tavolata, as well as Capitol Hill’s Anchovies & Olives, Rione XIII, and Bar Cotto.

We look forward to these two great additions to our Madrona neighborhood.  Look for Red Cow restaurant to open after the new year and Noyer to open in the spring.  Welcome Ethan and company to Madrona!

Madrona Dining & Sipping Society Event: Dine at Marche October 23rd

Last month’s dinner dining get together was a success at the Hi Spot Cafe for one last evening out on the patio before the cold weather blew in, and this month the Madrona Dining & Sipping Society has a prix fixe dinner planned at Marche in Pike Place Market! Next week on Wednesday October 23rd diners will head to the Inn in the Market at 6:30pm where Marche’s chef and owner, and Madrona resident Daisley Gordon will prepare a menu to remember for 40 lucky guests. He has boasted of a lovely special family style feast for diners, which will be carefully paired with wine for three courses.

There is only room for 40 at the roundtable, so please rsvp if you’d like to join. To learn more about the event, menu, or reserve your spot be sure you’re on the MDSS email list.
