A Bottlehouse Birthday and Farewell To Wilridge’s Barrel

bottlehouse

Madrona’s Bottlehouse, which recently earned the distinction of being voted one of Seattle’s best patios, is holding a series of pop-up events this summer, starting with a celebration of its fourth birthday this Saturday, June 7. Whether you’re a beer or wine fan, Bottlehouse has something for every drinker’s palate, with a good selection of both northwest and European wines and a rotating cast of beers on tap and by the bottle. And what would wine be without its accompanying cheese? Dedicated cheesemongers are on hand to help you pick the perfect fromage, along with greens, toasts and sandwiches, to pair with your drink. For its birthday bash from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. this Saturday, they’ll be offering food and drink specials and DJ Deegan will provide the musical soundtrack to the night.

Wilridge Madrona

When you visit the Bottlehouse, take a last look at the signature wine barrel that has long sat in the front yard of neighboring Wilridge Winery, as the barrel will be officially retired after the winery’s “Bye to the Barrel” party on Sunday, June 22.

The European-made 1,000-gallon barrel, rescued from winery owner Paul Beveridge’s friends’ property near Palo Alto, Calif., has been empty throughout its residence in Madrona, which has played a part in its deterioration over the years. Hot summers caused the staves (the wooden strips that make up the body of the barrel) to dry out and shrink, in turn loosening the metal hoops that keep them in place. Moss and fungus growing inside are contributing to its collapse, and the time has finally come for it to be removed for good. Beveridge said in an e-mail to members of the community council that he is hoping to preserve the portion of the barrel that includes the hand-painted Wilridge logo and display it somewhere in the winery.

Come say your fond farewells and get one last photo with the barrel while enjoying special barrel wine tastings beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the 22nd. 34th Avenue just won’t be the same!

Another Madrona: Madrona Manor

Madrona Tree SculptureOften I search for “Madrona” related terms on Google and I come across the usual suspects, one of which is the Madrona Manor.  Madrona Manor is a boutique hotel in the California wine country about 65 miles north of San Francisco.  Looks like a really nice inn and a good place for Madrona residents to visit since they share our name and our neighborhood’s apparent love for wine (Wilridge Winery, Bottlehouse, Madrona Wine Merchants, etc).

Another good reason to visit Madrona Manor is the inn was recognized by Travel + Leisure as one of the Best U.S. Hotels for the Holidays.  Ironically, if you do not want to travel that far to visit a top hotel for the holidays, then you have to go no further than Downtown Seattle and visit Hotel Vintage Park (map) which was also featured by Travel + Leisure.  If you do not have plans for Christmas Eve, there may be time to book a reservation at the hotel restaurant: Tulio.  Enjoy a traditional Italian Christmas Eve feast centered around seven courses of seafood; a special edition to their regular menu.

Something Different in Madrona…Right Here at Bottlehouse and…

Wilridge Winery

Before

Bottlehouse Madrona

After

Walking around Madrona the other day and something was different.  (Think Tommy Boy) Not here by Pritty Boys Pizza, not here so much by St. Clouds and Madrona Ale House, but right here at Bottlehouse and Wilridge Winery.  Then it hit me like a big 2 x 4 across the face – Bottlehouse and Wildridge Winery got a paint job – at least I thought the building did.  So I finally went though my pictures to see the before and after.  It could be just the Seattle sunny weather, people walking around Madrona, and patrons enjoying the Bottlehouse deck, but I think the paint job looks good.

Wilridge Winery & Bottlehouse in Madrona – Free Tastings on Thursdays During March

Wilridge Winery has been a long time resident of Madrona.  Located on 34th Avenue in the middle of the Madrona Business District for over 20 years, Wilridge is the longest continuously operated winery in Seattle.  This last fall, Bottlehouse opened on the floor above Wilridge.  Bottlehouse features a gallery of wine.  Stop by for a tasting or buy a bottle to take home.  If you stay, make sure to have a small plate of cheese, cured meats, and bread.  Bottlehouse also offers microbrews and is one of the first places in Seattle that offers wine on tap.

The month of March is Washington Wine Month.  To celebrate, Bottlehouse will feature a local wine maker every Thursday in March from 6 PM to 8 PM.  Tastings are free.  Come to Madrona and enjoy some of Washington State’s best wines.
